    Very sorry about this. Pain during sexual intercourse is not an uncommon complaint in outpatient clinics.

    The causes varies, many of which are easy to treat while others may be difficult to manage.

    Pain during intercourse could be superficial (occurring around the entrance of the vagina) or deep (occurring more during deep penetration)

    Infectious diseases such as ascending upper genital tract infections (Pelvic inflammatory disease), endometriosis or pelvic adhesions from complications of infections, previous surgeries or other lesions are common causes of pain during deep vaginal penetration at intercourse.

    Chronic vulvovaginal fungal infections are common and often times causes vulva escoriations, vaginal thrush and pain at intercourse. Psoriasis and lichen sclerosis could cause similar blisters and cause pain at sexual intercourse.

    Thinning of the vulva and vagina could cause pain at intercourse. It is common around the time of menopause and long after menopause.

    It is important to note that poor arousal may be the result or cause of sexual pain and adequate foreplay and lubricants usually help to break this cycle

    Narrowing of the vagina may result from application of chemical agents or herbal cocution into the vagina. This is common among ladies who visit traditional homes to get remedies to get pregnant or to tighten their vagina. the medical name is gynaetresia and treatment may be by surgery. some women are born with a narrow vagina too. this is rare.

    The penis may be unusually larger than the vagina. (Peno-vagina disproportion) This could result in pain at intercourse.
